This statistical release is based on analysis of auction data on crops provided by Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited (FCBL). It presents the half yearly volume and value of different crops auctioned in 4 (Four) auction yards of Phuntsholing, Samtse, Samdrupjongkhar and Gaylegphu during the period January-June 2018. Information on the auction of crops in terms of volume and value of different crops for the same period in 2017 is also presented in this release, to give a sense of trend in auction of crops.

The publication is a compendium of relevant statistics in the domain ofRenewable Natural Resources collected by RSD and various departments/agencies both within and outside the MoAF. The statistics presented in this publication are thoroughly harmonised, scrutinised and validated by the RSD and theRNR Statistics Technical Working Group (RS-TWG) and therefore are highlyreliable for use as official statistics of the MoAF. As data are collected and compiled fromvarious sources, each statistical table is accompanied with a mention of the source, firstlyto duly acknowledge the data contributors and secondly, the users maycontact the source for further information.

  • Manual on Paddy Yield Estimation

Paddy is one of the most important cereal crops in Bhutan. Hence reliable statistics on its annual production and its trend over the years is important for informed decision making, from food security view point.

Paddy production is commonly estimated from survey interview of farmers relying on their recall accuracy. However, recall is often wrought with high-non sampling error, particularly if the survey is conducted many months after the harvest. In such circumstances, it may be wise to compute production as a function of harvested area multiplied by yield. Harvested area is much easier to remember by farmers or it can even be measured anytime by the enumerator. With regard to yield estimation, here is where the usefulness of crop-cut experiments come in.

The MoAF is thus very pleased to come out with the manual titled ‘Paddy Yield Estimation in Bhutan’ for use in the field. This manual comprehensively describes the probability sampling procedures required to be followed thus allowing us to make good estimates with measure of sampling error for every paddy growing Dzongkhag.

The manual has been developed in close consultation with the agriculture sectors and with support from FAO.

  • MoAF to implement the Strategic Plan for RNR Statistics

The Strategic Plan for Renewable Natural Resources Statistics (SPRNRS) has been developed in compliance to the roadmap, preceded by an In-depth Country Assessment of the National System for RNR Statistics in Bhutan (IdCA). The IdCA identified that the existing RNR statistical system is characterized by gaps in information quality, inconsistency in data, inadequate availability and accessibility to users and inadequate human and technological capacity to meet user requirements. Therefore, the purpose of this strategy plan is to provide a framework and methodology that will enhance the quality and availability of RNR statistics to guide policy analysis and informed decision making.

The implementation of SP-RNRS is expected to bring about transformational change of the current state of RNR statistics – characterized by gaps in information quality – to a system that meets the requirement of relevant users, producing statistics of good quality and coverage being managed by appropriate professionals with good statistical capacity through application of modern technological tools. The SPRNRS is approved and endorsed by the RNR-GNHC in June 2018, the highest decision-making body in the MoAF.
