  • 1st March 2019: The RNR Census 2019 enumeration kicks off

    The enumeration of the RNR Census 2019 has officially begun this morning. The census enumeration period is scheduled from 1-31 March 2019. It will enumerate all entities engaged in RNR activities in all the 205 Gewogs and Thromdes. The census aims to capture information on the structure of the agriculture sector for policy and planning purposes. The enumerators are the Gewog Agriculture/Livestock officials, supervised at the Dzongkhag level by their Sector Heads and nationally coordinated by the RNR Statistics Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

  • 5th RBFE inaugurated in Samdrup Jongkhar

    21 February, Samdrup Jongkhar:  His Majesty The King graced the inauguration of the fifth Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition (RBFE) at Tendrelthang. The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen and His Royal Highness The Gyalsey along with the Royal Family members also graced the event. The Prime Minister, the Ambassador of India to Bhutan and the invitees were also present.

    The exhibition with a theme, ‘Building clean, safe, organised and beautiful living environments for general well-being and happiness’ is dedicated to the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty. It aims to promote floriculture and educate the public on the impact of creating clean, safe, organised and beautiful urban spaces.

  • Electric fencing proving successful in khoma

    Electric fencing of farmland is gaining popularity among many farmers across the country. They say that electric fence help in reducing crop damages. Therefore, it aids to increase crop cultivation with plethora of diversification. Farmers also spend less time guarding crops and it is helping in the downsizing the fallow land in the area.

    A Babtong village in khoma geog is located around 6km from the geog center and with the funding support from BTFEC through Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary, a total area of 31 Acres belonging to 26 households mostly of paddy field were fenced with electricity in the year 2015. It was almost running three year under operation as of today and no problem been foreseen so far.

  • New fish and bird species for Bhutan, recorded from Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS)

    Distribution

    Striped dwarf catfish is a species of catfish of the family Bagridae. It is found in brackish water systems with marginal vegetation in lakes and swamps with a mud substrate of Asian countries of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and probably Myanmar. However, in PWS it was first recorded in 2017 and consecutively in 2018 in running Singye stream at an elevation of 213 masl (26°46’18.78″N; 90°11’23.83″E). The population is known to be decreasing in recent past, due to catching, pet trading and habitat destruction (IUCN, 2010).

  • Bhutanese Journal of Agriculture (BJA) Volume II Launched

    February 15, Thimphu: The Department of Agriculture launched the second volume of the Bhutanese Journal of Agriculture. The opening was graced by Aum Kinlay Tshering, Hon’ble Director, Department of Agriculture at DoA conference hall. The Director put on record her appreciation to the authors, reviewers and editorial board members for their contribution and for putting in extra effort to publish this edition successfully. She emphasized the importance of continuously working towards improving the quality of the journal and to encourage young researchers to develop a habit of scientific writing.

    This edition comprises technical papers from crop production, digital soil mapping, economics, post harvest management, agro-biodiversity and morpho-agronomic analysis of new crop varieties.
