  • Regional cooperative workshop taking place in Phuntsholing

    29- 30 April, Phuntsholing: The Cooperative Development Division under the Department of Marketing and Cooperatives is organizing the Regional Cooperative Workshop funded by the EU-TCP in Phuntsholing from April 29-30 with the theme “Enhancing Cooperation and Coordination for Better Success”.

    The two days workshop involving stakeholders like DOA,DOL,MoEA, Gewog Administration, Dzongkhag Planning sector, Farmer groups and Cooperatives  of Chukha, Haa, Paro and Samtse will focus on sharing  successful initiatives and good practices of the FGs/Coops and challenges faced in the fields. The workshop will then discuss on recommendations to improve the functioning of the Cooperative Business in the country.

  • Global Food Policy Report 2019 launched

    29 April, Thimphu: The Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor and the Director General for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Dr.  Sheggen Fan launched the Global Food Policy Report 2019 at Hotel Migmar.

     The eighth edition of the report reviews the major food policy issues, developments and decisions of 2018, and considers challenges and opportunities ahead. In 2018, many regions of the world faced increasing rates of hunger with global undernourishment continuing to rise for the third year in a row and stagnation in tackling malnutrition.

  • Ninth South Asia and Central Asia Man and Biosphere Network meeting

    25- 27 April, Thimphu: The Nature Conservation Division under Department of Forests and Park Services in collaboration with Bhutan National Commission for UNESCO under Ministry of Education and UNESCO New Delhi office organised the Ninth South Asia and Central Asia Man and Biosphere Network (SACAM) meeting in Thimphu with the theme “Citizen Science in Biosphere Reserves”.

    The first two day of the meeting focused on introduction to MAB, sharing of experiences and opportunities from Biosphere Reserve network in South and Central Asia. The third day will be field visit to Bhutan’s proposed MAB site at Lampelri Royal Botanical Park.

  • Bird Flu outbreak at Dhamdara under control

    Chukha: A bird flu outbreak which was reported on April 9 killing 264 poultry birds in local backyard and semi-commercial poultry farms in Dhamdara, Phuentsholing is now under control.

    The general public are urged not to get alarmed since the disease is contained at the source of outbreak and required control measures are already put in place. However, the public are advised to take precautions like washing of hands after handling poultry, chicken and eggs with soap and water.

    The disease was confirmed through a laboratory test at the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH), Serbithang using reverse transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction test. Following the confirmation, the National Incident Command Committee chaired by the Hon’ble Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests immediately activated the Incident Operation Centre (IOC) at Thromde Veterinary Hospital/Satellite Laboratory in Phuentsholing with the rapid response team for immediate containment and response to the outbreak.
