  • Dairy product processing training for Haa farmers and youth

    5-9, June, Haa: Five days training programme on yogurt, paneer and cheese processing is underway in Haa. The training is organised by the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector and National Dairy Research and Development Centre.

    Participants include members from dairy groups, youth working in milk processing unit (MPU) and yogurt entrepreneurs in Haa.

  • BAFRA observes first World Food Safety Day

    June 7: BAFRA celebrates the first World Food Safety Day, the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2018 to celebrate every year. This International day is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food we eat is safe. Whether one produces, processes, sells, prepares or consumes food, one has a role in keeping it safe. The FAO/WHO and member states recognise that “Everyone has the right to safe, nutritious and sufficient food”.

    BAFRA in collaboration with relevant agencies in the country is celebrating the event by creating awareness on food safety to highlight that everyone involved in the food systems has a part to play. World Food Safety Day messages, posters and aprons were circulated through websites and social media to reach the masses.

  • Bhutan Organic Guarantee System (BOGS) documents launched

    The National Organic Programme (NOP) launched the Bhutan Organic Guarantee System (BOGS) documents on June 5 at Norkhil Boutique Hotel & Spa.

    The launched documents including the standard side and the conformity assessment enables a producer/products to access the Bhutan Organic Mark which is essential for organic farming in the country. It will serve as a manual and guidelines for organic farmers during the certification process.

  • Towards enhancing Swiss business collaboration

    5 June, Thimphu: A twenty member Swiss business delegation led by His Excellency, Andreas Baum, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Bhutan and India met with the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor to explore and strengthen the Swiss business collaboration in Bhutan. The Hon’ble Lyonpo Kinzang Dorji, Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Bhutan; the Agriculture Secretary, Dasho Rinzin Dorji and heads of the departments and agency were also present.

    Welcoming the delegation, Lyonpo shared the Ministry’s priority areas during the 12th five year plan such as organic farming, value added products, reduce import of food items and market among others. Swiss being one of the advanced countries in value addition technologies, Lyonpo explored the possibility of sharing such resources to improve all the three sectors: agriculture, forestry and livestock in the country.

  • Preparing for implementation of Imported Food Control in Bhutan

    3-6 June, Paro: Twenty seven BAFRA officials from field and the entry point offices along with a representative from the Regional Revenue and Customs Office, Paro are attending a training workshop on risk-based inspection and sampling of Imported Food at Metta Resort and Spa. The objective of the training is to orient the participants on the use of risk-based inspection and sampling manual for imported food commodities.

    The training highlights the importance of implementation of food import control system and the need of training BAFRA officials on the manual for uniform implementation throughout the country. The training consists of presentation on principles of risk categorisation of food commodities, risk-based inspection and sampling, individual and group exercise on categorisation of food commodities based on risk and identification of product specification.
