  • Capacity building on inspection and quality control of fortified rice

    Practical session at Charo Tshongdrel Rice Mill, Phuentsholing

    13-15 November, Phuentsholing: Seventeen BAFRA officials and four quality control officials from the Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited (FCBL) are attending hands on training on inspection and quality control of fortified rice at Hotel Palm. The training is aimed at enhancing capacity building of BAFRA and FCBL to ensure quality of fortified rice throughout the supply chain of school feeding program.

  • Mushroom spawn production equipment inaugurated

    15 October, Thimphu: His Excellency, Mr. Shingo Miyamoto, the Minister for Economic and Development , Embassy of Japan based in India inaugurated the mushroom spawn production equipment at the National Mushroom Centre.

    The equipment including sawdust crusher mill, high temperature and pressure cubic steriliser, moisture analyser, hot air oven, electronic balance, deep freezer and refrigerated van were procured from the grant assistance for grassroots human security project (GGP), Embassy of Japan in March-May 2018. They cost around Nu. 6.59 M out of which Nu. 4.67 M were funded by GGP based on the agreement signed between GGP and the Department of Agriculture (DoA) in March 2017. The new set of equipment replaced the 29 years old set which were procured during 1989-1990.

  • Extensions agents learn dairy post production technologies

    28 October-1 November: Twenty extension agents from GEF project areas of Wangdue, Tsirang, Haa, Paro, Punakha and Thimphu attended a training, ‘Capacity enhancement on Dairy Post Production Technologies (Farm-To-Table)’ with theory and hands on practical production of yogurt, paneer, rasgulla and mozzarella.

    The theory session was conducted at the Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC), Wangdue while the practical session was held at the milk processing unit in Kuruthang, Punkaha. The National Dairy Research and Development Centre, Yusipang and RLDC-Wangdue organised the training with fund from GEF-LDCF.

  • Fourth National Codex Committee Meeting

    Thimphu: The fourth National Codex Committee (NCC) meeting was held on October 31 under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Agriculture Secretary, Dasho Rinzin Dorji. The meeting was held to endorse the revised Codex Procedural Manual for Bhutan and get the approval for formulation of 11 technical regulations for prioritised food and agricultural commodities.

    In his opening remarks, the chair highlighted the importance of NCC to perform its functions towards fulfilling the mandates as per Food Act of Bhutan 2005 and contributing to the works of Codex Alimentarius Commission. He reminded the members on the roles and responsibilities of NCC as technical advisory committee on the matters related to food safety and standards. The meeting also updated the members on the current Codex work in Bhutan and international Codex activities that are relevant to Bhutan.

  • White-bellied Heron sighted at Dagachhu Dam Site

    A White-bellied Heron being captured by CCTV on sand deposition

    Two White-bellied Herons (WBH) were sighted at Dagachhu Hydro Power dam site on October 22 at around 10:32:01 am when a team comprising of officials from Dagana Forest Division and Dagachhu Hydro Power Corporation (DHPC) visited the dam site at Gewthang under Kana gewog for inspection of sand deposit. However, the team couldn’t take the picture as the birds shied away or flew away to inaccessible areas.
