28 September, Samtse: The Department of Livestock (DoL) officially released a dairy breed called ‘Karan Fries’ at the National Jersey Breeding Centre (NJBC) in Samtse on a trial basis to provide more options of dairy breeds for the livestock farmers in the country.
10 October, Thimphu: Considering the successful thirty years of partnership, the Ministry and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) celebrated the first Bhutan-ICIMOD day at the conference hall of the Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited.
The 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) began from 6-17 October 2014 in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea, with the theme ‘Biodiversity for Sustainable Development’. The substantive issues under consideration at CBD COP 12 include: assessment of progress in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; biodiversity and sustainable development; marine and coastal biodiversity; biodiversity and climate change; biofuels; traditional knowledge; sustainable wildlife management; invasive alien species; synthetic biology; ecosystem conservation and restoration; and resource mobilization. Participants from over 190 countries are attending the meeting.
During a recent collaborative research project of documenting fish diversity in the country, researchers from the College of Natural Resources (CNR), Bhutan and Saint Louis University, USA, discovered a new species of torrent catfish from Khalingchhu in the eastern part of Bhutan. It is the first endemic fish species to Bhutan, found nowhere else in the world. The fish was named Parachiloglanis bhutanensis in honor of the country in which it is endemic to.
