  • GPS Collaring of Asian Elephants in Southern Bhutan

    In an attempt to better understand the conflict surrounding elephants and farmers in Southern Bhutan, the Wildlife Conservation Division (WCD) and the Samtse Forest Division has successfully collared two Asian Elephants Elephas maximus indicus in the adjoining areas of Khaling Wildlife Sanctuary. The makhna (tuskless male) was collared on March 16 and the female from a different herd on March 18 by fitting with satellite (GPS) collars using both iridium and VHF tracking mode. This scheme is part of a larger effort to understand and manage human wildlife conflicts where various schemes already in place include solar electric fencing, habitat improvement, and awareness meetings.

    The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC), Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests conducted seven-days “Hands on Training Program on Electric Fencing System” for core group at Kaba and Daba village of Nubi Geog under Trongsa dzongkhag from 17 – 23March, 2014. The main objective of the training program was to provide hands on knowledge and skills on Electric Fencing System (EFS) and its establishment to regional researchers of respective RDCs.

    23 March 2014, Gelephu: The Council for RNR Research of Bhutan (CoRRB) in collaboration with Department of Health (Ministry of Health), Department of Education (Ministry of Education) and Department of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture and Forests) conducted a three days orientation program for 15 participant teachers under Asian Vegetable Research Development Collaboration (AVRDC) from 21 to 23 March at the RNR Research Development Centre in Bhur, Gelephug.
