  • Artificial Insemination program inaugurated in Samdrup Jongkhar

    131 March, Samdrup Jongkhar: In order to popularise superior quality genetic breeds through provision of efficient nutrition and health care management and achieve genetic potentials of the crossbred cows, an Artificial Insemination (AI) program followed by sensitisation cum training was inaugurated in Martshalla geog. The improvement of the genetic materials could mean an increase in the production by more than 1200 litres of milk in 300 days (one lactation length).

    The Geog Gup graced the program as a Chief Guest who highlighted the importance of AI and its benefits for the rural community in his speech. More than 50 farmers of Dungmanma and Gorthongma Dairy Cooperatives, which was established five years ago, attended the program.

  • Orong farmers solve Water Shortage


    The community and its problem:

    Orong, a community located centrally among the other villages of Orong geog under Samdrup Jongkhar District consists of 109 households. A total of 1,019 of the total population of Orong geog reside in this community. Orong community’s biggest problem was water shortage for both drinking and irrigation although there are potentials for increasing crop production. In the absence of irrigation facilities, they depended mostly on rainfall, which over the years have also become erratic making the situation worse. Water being the lifeline, Orongpas had various problems related to water. Hygiene and sufficient production of crops, particularly vegetables, was never assured and conflicts over water were common. The geog Administration had recorded as high as 10 disputes related to water in a year.

    27 March, Sarpang: To enhance livelihood options of farmers, different interventions have been felt necessary to provide them opportunities for “diversity” and a “coping strategy”. Considering this, the Department of Livestock (DoL), has initiated “Turkey Farming” on a pilot basis. With the success in hatching Turkey eggs and its rearing protocols, the Department is now set to up-scale such interventions at the farm level.
