    Tomorrow, 11 November 2014, is a National Holiday to observe His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s 60th Birth Anniversary Celebrations as per the Lunar Calendar (59th birth Anniversary as per the Western Calendar). The year long celebrations of the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo according to the Lunar Calendar will be launched tomorrow at Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu.

  • Regional Wildlife Research Symposium

    1November 6: More than 50 participants including wildlife managers, research scientist and practitioners from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, India, Nepal, Portugal and the United States are attending a week-long regional wildlife symposium at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment, Lamai Goempa, Bumthang.

    Presentations will be delivered on a wide range of topics focusing on monitoring wildlife populations in the Himalayas, non-invasive genetic sampling to monitor biodiversity, non-invasive genetic sampling for tiger population estimation and efficacy of camera trapping in felid research

  • The first International Snow Leopard’s Day

    “Conserving Snow Leopards to secure a healthy mountain ecosystem”

    1 (2)4 November, Haa. Why are the Snow leopards important to conserve? This elusive snow leopard Panthera uncia, is under tremendous threat due to poaching and fragmentation of habitats across its geographical range. In order to affirm collective action to conserve this rare species and its fragile habitat, the Government of twelve snow leopard range countries and international partner agencies gathered at Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic in 2013 to develop the ‘Global Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection Programme’ based on inputs from the respective range countries in the form of National Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection Programme (NSLEPP). The forum amongst others unanimously adopted October 23 of every year as the “International Snow Leopards Day” and requested the respective Governments to observe this important day to benefit the snow leopard conservation.

It is being undertaken to review the achievements, understand key issues faced by the implementing agencies and to resolve the issues.

    The progress review for all the Department and Agencies under the Ministry started from 29 October and it will end today. The progress review meeting is being chaired by the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo.

    Koren team with HE Lyonpo on 28 Oct 201427 October: Biosafety delegation from South Korea lead by Dr. Ho Min Jang, Director, Korean Biosafety Clearing House, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIB) is in the country to discuss and explore possible future collaborations with Bhutan Biosafety Clearing House and other relevant stakeholders. During their visit, the delegation will meet officials from Ministry for Agriculture and Forests and visit various institutes at Paro, Thimphu. Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang dzongkhags.

    The delegation will leave the country on 31 October.
