    22 June, Jakar: The seventh batch of one-year certificate course in Conservation, Environment and Forestry Studies which was from July 2014 to June 2015 was conducted at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE), formally concluded today with the Convocation Ceremony. The trainees who attended the course included both in-service and pre-service candidates selected to work at the Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited (NRDCL) after the course. During the one year course the trainees were introduced to various forestry basics including Forest Management; Silviculture; Forest Botany and Wildlife Conservation. After the theory course they were sent on attachment for the period of five months to various NRDCL offices.

  • High Commissioner for Canada to India meets Hon’ble Lyonpo

    DSC05602June 19, Thimphu: The Hon’ble High Commissioner for Canada to India, Nadir Patel and his delegation paid a courtesy call to the Honb’le Agriculture Lyonpo, Yeshey Dorji. The High Commissioner who is in the country for the first time also serves as Canada’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Nepal and Bhutan.

    At the meeting, Lyonpo talked about the forest, agriculture and livestock as the three important sectors under the Ministry among others highlighting more on the forest and park services activities. He also shared the team on the on-going mass tree plantation around Thimphu.

  • Training of Trainers and System Testing of G2C Database for Essential Veterinary Drug Program

    Picture for news clipThe National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH), Serbithang under the Department of Livestock (DoL) is conducting a seven days “Training of Trainers and System Testing for G2C Database for Essential Veterinary Drug Program (EVDP)” in the country from 15th June 2015 to 21st June 2015.

    The training is being attended by 21 participants from various units under the Department of Livestock such as Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospitals, Regional Livestock Development Centres, National Animal Hospital, Livestock Central Store, National Centre for Animal Health and DoL HQ.

  • A dedicatory plantation on June 2nd, 2015- Social Forestry Day

    Mongar2nd June, Mongar: On the eve of celebrating 2nd June 2015 Social Forestry Day and also to commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the members of the Drangmaling Kuenphen Community Forest under Mongar Dzongkhag and the staffs of Central Park Range of Phrumsengla National Park have shown the exemplary work to rest of the Community Forest members to prove that Community Forest is not only for utilisation of forest resources but also a way to re-stock the resources through plantation of trees of having high commercial timber values.

    The Day was celebrated by planting over 100 numbers of Walnut seedlings planted in 1.5 acres in the burnt and open areas of the CF. The seedlings were supplied from the nursery of Central Park Range Office at Lingmethang, Mongar upon the requisition put up by the members. The members of the CF were contented with their all efforts and expressed the views of having initiated plantation by the park management for the first time within 5th year of managing their Community Forest since 2010. They were also extremely delighted for being able to dedicate their work on the auspicious day to celebrate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. One member said, “The trees they planted on this day would grow not only for us but even I couldn’t imagine how much would be the numbers in our child’s time”. The technical support and guidance were given to the members on how to take care of the seedlings.

    Ziziphus sp. known widely as Chamshing in Bhutan is a hardy deciduous tree under the Rhamnaceae family. The tree is highly revered in Bhutan as its stony seeds are used as rosary beads to enchant prayers in Buddhism. The species is of high conservation importance due to its rarity induced by poor regeneration and lack of scientific studies.
