  • SFED trains foresters on Forest monitoring through GIS and Remote Sensing

    SFED trg16-20 Nov. 2015, Thimphu: Some 15 foresters from Dzongkhag Forestry Sectors and Territorial Divisions are currently getting trained on using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) to monitor the forests at Hotel RochogPel in Thimphu.

    With use of GIS and RS, foresters will be able to monitor forest dynamics real times in terms of forest cover to woody biomass. The technology can also enable foresters to monitor forest boundary, forest strata, canopy density, forest fires, forest degradations, illegal activities, encroachment, illegal mining and several other aspects.

  • Hon’ble Lyonpo meets Swedish Special Representative for Environment Issues

    unnamedNovember 19, Thimphu: The Special Representative for Environment Issues, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Lena Ek called on the Hon’ble Lyonpo, Yeshey Dorji. They discussed on the environmental conversation initiatives, river systems, wildlife and agriculture farming among others.

    The Special Representative also expressed the Swedish interest of collaboration in areas like forestry and agro-forestry in the future. She was accompanied by Mikael Johansson, the Second Secretary from the Embassy of Sweden based at New Delhi.

  • SAP awarding ceremony for pot and herbal gardening winners held

    for web 1November 19, Thimphu: In an award ceremony, the Director General for Department of School Education, Mr. Karma Yeshey congratulated 14 Thimphu Thomde Schools for initiating the pot garden and strengthening the herbal garden concept as a part of the School Agriculture Programme (SAP).

    The Director General said that pot gardening is one of the concepts that is encouraging in schools where they do not have sufficient garden area. In such situation, students still can practice the gardening and instill the knowledge and skills of gardening that is very much part of wholesome education policy. He also acknowledged the participating schools for imparting the knowledge of herbal gardening to students that used to be the knowledge only to the National Institute of Traditional Medicine in the past. Although Bhutan was known by “Lhodzong Menzong”, many people do not know many herbal and medicinal plants that are around us.

  • World Antibiotic Awareness Week

    unnamed16-22 November: 16 November 2015 marks the launch of the first World Antibiotic Awareness Week to raise awareness of best practice for using antibiotics and reduce the risks of bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics and to prolong their effectiveness.

    The responsible and prudent use of antibiotics, in both people and animals, is crucial, not only in the interests of human health but also for animal health and animal welfare. To mark this special week, the OIE is making publicly available a dedicated internet portal, along with new posters and infographics, to enable national authorities, veterinarians, breeders and animal owners to take a more effective role in counteracting the major threat to public health posed by antimicrobial resistance.
