  • Lightning sparks two consecutive forest fires in Trashigang earlier this month

    bartsham-fire28 October 2016, Thimphu: In one of the rare incidences, huge bolts of lightning started two forest fires in two consecutive days at Udzorong and Bartsham in Trashigang, earlier this month. At Udzorong, the lightning hit a huge chirpine tree leaving a clear mark resulting in a forest fire at the place called Jomtshang on 2nd October, 2016 while a day later, on 3rd October, 2016, the forest caught fire when similar lightning struck at Bartsham.

    According to Dendup Tshering, Chief Forestry Officer (CFO) of Tashigang Forest Division, he was in the office and at around 2 PM, he saw or heard a terrible lightning in that area. He feared it might spark forest fire and it exactly happened what he feared. “In ten minutes, we received a confirmed fire alarm,” said CFO.

  • Khaki Silverline Butterfly: A New Record for Bhutan

    With the addition of Khaki Silverline (Cigaritis rukmini), total number of butterfly species recorded in Bhutan is 728. Mr. Kado Rinchen, a senior forestkhaki-silverlineer of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park spotted the butterfly on 1st October, 2016 at Tongtophey, Trongsa.

    Mr. Karma Wangdi, a research assistant of the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment has confirmed it as a new record for Bhutan in the family of Lycaenidae (Blues). According to Karma Wangdi, with the addition of this new record, Bhutan now has 174 species of Lycaenidae.

  • JICA partnership project to strengthen organic farming

    representatives-during-the-signing-of-japan-international-cooperation-agency-jica-partnership-project27th October, Thimphu: The Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Royal Government of Bhutan signed a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Partnership Project on “Creation of Active Local Communities through the Introduction of Organic Agriculture with the System of Circulating Natural Materials in Bhutan”.

    Mr. Mitsukuni Inaba, Director for NoP-Civil Institute of Organic Rice Cultivation, Mr. Koa Tasaka, Board Member of Asian Rural Institute and Mr. Koji Yamada, Chief Representative of Japan International Corporation Agency Bhutan office represented JICA during the signing while Mr. Ganesh B. Chettri, Offtg. DG of Department of Agriculture, MoAF and Mr. Rinchen Wangdi, Chief of Development Corporation Division GNHC represented Bhutan.

  • Field day for improved off grid cardamom curing dryer in Dagana

    img_1475A field day programme was jointly organized by the Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector and Agriculture Machinery Centre on improved large scale off grid curing dryer for cardamom. It was held on October 25, at farmer’s place in Kana geog under Dagana Dzongkhag. More than seventy farmers from all geogs and all extension officers attended.

    AMC explained the test results and also the advantages of this modified improved curing dryer which is originally from India. Series of modifications were made and had more advantages over the traditional method. It is fire risk free, smoke free and with slow drying rate, the quality is very good. It is dried using heat instead of fire as in traditional method. It is fuel efficient and also can be dried during the rain. The progressive farmer who had installed this technology for tests explained on the huge advantages of this technology and also showed the dried products. He dried more than 2000 kgs on this dryer.
