  • Third Asian Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation underway in New Delhi

    20160412_165221April 12-14, New Delhi: The 3rd Asian Ministerial Conference on tiger conservation is underway in New Delhi. Hosted by Government of India (GoI) and co-organised by the Global Tiger Forum (GTF) and the Global Tiger Initiative Council (GTIC), the conference is convened at a time when Global Media reports the first increase of global wild tigers by 20% from the 2010 baseline of 3200 tigers. Today, the population of global wild tiger is estimated at 3890.

    The conference was inaugurated by His Excellency, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister emphasised the need for collective efforts among the Tiger Range Countries (TRC’s).

  • Consultation meeting on Vegetable Go To School Project

    Untitled-1April 8, Thimphu: A consultation meeting on Vegetable Go To School (VeGoTs ) Project was held at Hotel Rochogpel with nine delegates from Nepal Vegetable Go To School Project, official from Policy and Planning Division and country’s team members from the Department of School Health and Nutrition and Department of Agriculture (DoA). The meeting was chaired by Ganesh Chhetri, the Offtg. Director General of DoA.

    The meeting shared the experiences and update on the project achievements implemented in last three years with funding from Asian Vegetable Research Development Center (AVRDC) Taiwan through Swiss Agency for Development and Corporation (SDC).

  • Training on Climate Smart Scientific Goat Production and Management

    DSC_0086Bumthang: A Training of Trainers course on Scientific Goat Production and Management was held from March 28-31 for the livestock production and extension staff of the goat rearing Dzongkhags and the focal person of the Regional Livestock Development Centres. The training first of its kind; enhanced the basic knowledge and skills on scientific goat production and management. It was organised by the National Highland Research and Development Centre (NH-RDC), Jakar, formerly known as RDC-Jakar.

    Goat is one of the first animals to be domesticated by humans about 9000 years ago. There are 200 different breeds of goat, producing a variety of products such as milk, meat and fine fibers. Besides, goats are being used for biological control of noxious weeds in many countries. In Bhutan, goats are reared mostly in the southern region for meat, manure, religious reasons and commercial purposes.

  • Aquaculture Workshop cum Coordination Meeting 2016 underway

    Untitled-1April 4-6, Sarpang: The Aquaculture Workshop Cum Coordination Meeting 2016 is underway in Gelephu. Participants include the Regional Directors of the four Regional Livestock Development Centres, Dzongkhag Livestock Officers, field officers and division heads from Department of Livestock (DoL). Organised by the National Centre for Aquaculture Research (NCAR), the workshop is being chaired by the Director General of DoL.

    The meeting aims to harmonise the country’s aquaculture program with the outcomes of the DoL’s Organisation Development Exercise (DoL-ODE) and the stipulations of annual performance agreement. Among other things, the event will enable the tweaking of existing aquaculture development strategies towards realising the 11th Five Year Plan aquaculture program goals. Further, a critical assessment of the challenges faced in developing aquaculture in Bhutan will be conducted towards identifying and implementing solutions that are productive, dynamic and absolutely amenable to the objectives of ODE.
