  • Meeting Kencho: An Educated Yak Herder of Haa- a Feature Story

I happened to meet Kencho hailing from Dumcho village in Haa during my visit to Nub Tshonapata Lake on 2 July 2015. He was born to Mr. Tshering and Mrs. Rinzin Lham. His father expired when he was just one month old. He is now 26 years old and still single. His early education began in Tshaphel Lower Secondary School, where he studied from class PP to VIII. Later he continued his education in Paro Shaba Middle Secondary School till class XII. Then he was forced to drop from school, as there was nobody back home to look after the yaks.

Daily routine: Kencho usually gets up early in the morning at 4:30 AM. He then hastily lights the fire and prepares tea. Tea is offered to the local deity first and incense made from juniper needles is burnt to start a new day. After tea he leaves to milk the yaks with a wooden bucket and a rope. The rope is used to tie the calf while milking and the bucket serves as a container for the milk. Then, he walks up the gentle slope and vanishes from site to gather all the yaks to the tent.
