  • Workshop on Organic Farming Research and Education

    Group pictureJuly 25-26, Thimphu: A workshop on Organic Farming Research and Education was organised by National Organic Programme (NOP) at the Research and Development Centre (RDC)-Yusipang from with a resource person from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. Researchers from the RDC-Yusipang, technical working group members from departments and agencies, officials from the agriculture department and NOP participated in it.

    The workshop strengthened the organic farming research system in the country. The research and development (R&) will play a key role in the organic farming sector development in the country to address various challenges confronted by this farming system. The important topics discussed were the status of organic agriculture in Bhutan, organic agriculture research and activities at RDC-Yusipang, organic sector, research and education in Germany, organic farming research at the University of Hohenheim and topics for future cooperation.

    22 July, 2016: His Excellency Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Hon'ble Minister of Health and Representative for Athang Thedtsho Constituency, inaugurated the opening of Farm shops at Phangyul and Nyisho Gewog in Wangdue Dzongkhag on 22 July, 2016. Also present were Members of National Assembly, Wangdue Dzongrab, Dzongkhag officials and Officials from the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives and Food Corporation of Bhutan Limited.

    July 20, Thimphu: The Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Dorji, handed over 600 copies of savings passbooks to RORUM Credit Cooperative, formed as an initiative of the Bhutan Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAOWE) and supported by the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.. The passbooks were received by the CEO of BAOWE.

  • EU Technical Cooperation Project in Support of RNR Sector launched

    Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Forests with Dr. Johann Hesse, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Bhutan 21st July, 2016, Thimphu: The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Royal Government of Bhutan and the Delegation of the European Union for Bhutan have launched the Operational Programme Estimate for Technical Cooperation Project in Support of the Renewable Natural Resources Sector (EUTCP) financed by the European Union.

    The EUTCP is a Nu.340 Million (Euro 4.6 million) project which will strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF) to achieve its objectives of the current, 11th Five Year Plan. Under this plan, the Ministry plays a key role in improving the livelihood in rural areas, ensure food security, and alleviate poverty in the country.

  • IRRI Deputy Director General for Research visits RDC-Bajo

    Untitled-1The association between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) dates back to 1984. This association continued actively till 2000 during which Bhutan immensely benefitted in terms of technical support, access to technologies and human resource development in rice research and development.

    To further strengthen the linkages between two institutes, Dr. Jacqueline Hughes, Deputy Director General for Research, IRRI, Philippines and Dr. Uma Shanker Singh from Country Office, India paid a short visit to Bhutan from the 10-13 July 2016. The visit was to revive and strengthen the collaboration between IRRI and Bhutan in rice research and development. The delegates discussed on the possibility of reinforcing the ties by signing a formal memorandum of understanding between two organisations during the meeting with the Agriculture Director General and senior officials held at Thimphu on 11 July 2016.
