  • Consultative meeting to develop and support Bhutan’s initiative towards Organic Farming

    web 1April 22, Thimphu: A consultative meeting between Korean delegates from the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM)-ASIA and Ministry of Agriculture and Forests took place in presence of the Hon’ble Agriculture Minister, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji.

    The meeting was conducted to focus on ways to enhance cooperation and support for the organic agriculture development in Bhutan and Korea. Through this meeting, some possible collaborations in training for technical staff in Organic Agriculture, possibility of support to develop organic training and demonstration centre and training and employing young people in organic farming in Korea were discussed.

    April 20-21, Thimphu: Around 50 Plant Regulatory and Quarantine Officials from all the BAFRA field offices are attending a workshop on “Challenges in Implementation of Seed Rules and Regulations and Plant Quarantine Rules at Chuniding Resort, Serbithang. The Director General for BAFRA, Namgay Wangchuk graced the opening session along with Division Chiefs.

  • Training on High Altitude and Wilderness First Aid is underway

    Untitled-2April 17-23, Bumthang: A weeklong training on High Altitude and Wilderness First Aid is underway at UWICE. The training is targeted to equip field personals from the Department of Forests and Park Services who are engaged in monitoring and patrolling of high altitude areas in case of medical emergency.

    The training covers theory and practical sessions on patient assessment, wilderness trauma, evacuation methods, high altitude illness, hypothermia, frostbite etc. It is being provided by two experts from the National Outdoor Leadership School Wilderness Medicine Institute, US, and a doctor from Ministry of Health, Thimphu. A total of 32 forestry field personals from various parks and territorial divisions are attending the training.

    15 – 17 April 2016, Royal Botanical Park, Lamperi: The Fourth Annual Rhododendron Festival held from 15 to 17 April 2016 at the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi near Dochula pass showcasing 29 of the 46 Rhododendrons found in Bhutan concluded yesterday. The festival was celebrated with the theme, ‘Bio-cultural Diversity’ exhibiting the park’s biodiversity and variety of park resident’s culture.

  • Livestock’s timely services save a life

    Untitled-1Pemagatshel: On the late evening of April 10, the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector had to respond to an unknown caller. The caller voice was very feeble and she was trying to address her problem, however she was not able to do so. What was clear at the end of conversation was that she needed our help to treat her cow. As usual, our team rushed to the site hastily with the emergency medical kits through the bumpy and dusty road at the maximum speed.

    Upon reaching the site, it was an emotional moment to see whole family in tears. Their pricy milking cow was lying and awaiting for death. We consoled them that the team would do the best to save her life which was producing 10 litres of milk and was a sole bread earner for the family. For a poor farmer, a cow that produces 10 litres of milk is a big asset to them and the wellbeing of the family was in the jeopardy.
