  • RNR extension conference for west and west central region

4- 5 March, Wangdue: The nationwide RNR extension conference for the West and West Central regions finally concludes today at College of Natural Resources (CNR), Lobesa. The RNR Extension Conference resumed after about a decade gap since its convention in 2009. The conference is tagged with the main theme of “Knowing more from the Grass Roots”. Since the geog extension officials are the main contact point with the farming community, gleaning for success stories and replicating it in other potential regions seem more pragmatic than reinventing the entire wheel.

During the inaugural ceremony of the two-day conference, the Agriculture Minister in his keynote address reiterated that such gatherings were convened to act as an exchange window for creative ideas and success stories from the fields. The Minister also highlighted that the conference is expected to ensure collective and greater success by avoiding individualism and working in isolation. The Honorable minister also stressed that it is in line with the vision of His Majesty the King on decentralisation of resources and funds at the local government level. Accordingly, the Field colleagues and like-wise, the concerned agencies were instigated to gear towards achieving food and nutrition sufficiency as well security towards the end of the 12th FYP as Bhutan will soon be graduating from the list of LDC by 2023, which will also be accompanied by the phasing out of most of the donor funds for our developmental activities.

  • Workshop on Strengthening Agricultural Marketing Services

5 March 2019: The Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives organised a three-day workshop from February 27 to March 1, 2019 at Phuentsholing. Participation included almost all relevant government agencies, including the Departments of Trade, Agriculture, Livestock, Forests and Park Services, State Owned Corporations including Food Corporation of Bhutan Ltd., Bhutan Livestock development Corporation Ltd., Farm Machinery Corporation Ltd., Green Bhutan Corporation Ltd., associations as well as the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bhutan Exporters Association and other agencies such as Bhutan Agro-Industries Ltd., and The Queen’s Project Office.

With so many agencies both in the government and private sector involved in providing direct or indirect marketing services to farmers, traders, agri-businesses and exporters in the country, there is bound to be duplication of efforts and there is a need to collaborate to complement the efforts and avoid wastage of scare resources. The need for such consultation is also prominently highlighted in the RNR Marketing Policy, 2018 making this the main reason for the workshop.

  • 6th World Wildlife Day observed at Jomotshangkha Wildlife Sanctuary

The 68th session of United Nations General Assembly declared 3rd March as World Wildlife Day (WWD) to raise the awareness on Wild Fauna and Flora and to address the plight of wildlife worldwide. The day was first commemorated in 2014 and since then Bhutan has been regularly observing the day.

For this year, the global theme for World Wildlife Day is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, and thus “Life below water: for people and planet” with focus on marine species. Since Bhutan is a landlocked nation with no marine habitats and even lesser aquatic habitats, the day in Bhutan was observed with a theme relevant to our nature of human-wildlife co-existence “Wildlife – The Next Door Neighbour, Enable Harmonious Co-existence”. The day was observed at Minjiwoong Central School under Jomotshangkha Dungkhag, organized by Jomotsangkha Wildlife Sanctuary (JWS) with support from Nature Conservation Division. The day was graced by Chief Dzongkhag Education Officer as a Chief Guest and attended by the Principal, staffs and students of Minjiwoong Central School.
