  • Mass Plantation along Thimphu-Paro Highway

    The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF), along with Forest division of Thimphu and Paro Dzongkhags, conducted a mass plantation program along the Thimphu-Paro Highway on 20th May 2019. This is the second mass plantation along the highway initiated by MoAF.

    His Excellency the Sanam Lyonpo officially launched the event with planting of a peach seedling at Chunzom. With the inaugural planting, the event took off starting from Chuzom towards Paro by Paro Forest Division and towards Thimphu by Thimphu Forests Division involving all the participants. The DANTAK officials, as agreed during the coordination meeting held on 4th April 2019 at MoAF, has arranged a tanker for watering seedlings. The plantation sites along the highway will be properly protected with painted bamboo fencing of uniform size and shape to promote aesthetic view of the highway.

  • Rescued Pangolin released on the International Biodiversity Day

    An Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) was rescued on the night of 21st May, 2019 from the Industrial area in Samdrup Jongkhar. Acting upon the tipoff from the local people, Mr. Ugyen Chophel (Dzongkhag Beautification Officer) and I rushed to the site and rescued a healthy male Pangolin, trying to encroach into the human settlement. It was immediately taken to the Forest Office and kept in the captivity for its safe release on the next day.

    As per the literature, the Indian pangolin is a solitary, shy, slow-moving and mostly nocturnal, and terrestrial mammal. This species is listed as Endangered A3d+4d due to the hunting and increasing levels of poaching, principally for its meat and scales, both for local use and for illicit international trade in scales, which has also occurred historically (International Union for Conservation of Nature [IUCN], 2013).

  • Gearing towards implementation of food import control system in Bhutan

    14-17 May 2019, Phuntsholing: The training workshop on Risk-based Inspection and Sampling of Imported Food is held in Bhutan Ga Me Ga Hotel, Phuntsholing. The objective of the training is orient BAFRA officials on the use of Risk-based Inspection and Sampling Manual for Imported Food Commodities. The training was attended by 25 BAFRA officials from southern Dzongkhags and the entry points and a representative from Regional Revenue and Customs Office, Phuntsholing and WHO Country Office.

    The opening session was graced by Mr. Namgay Wangchuk, Director General of BAFRA. He highlighted on the importance of implementation of food import control system and the need of training BAFRA officials on the Manual for uniform implementation throughout the country.
