    29 October 2015: Enroute to Mongar, Lyonpo launched the sheep restocking at Dechenpelrithang sheep farm at Bumthang. The farm was restocked with additional 246 native sheep taking the herd strength to 360. Such a measure, according to Lyonpo, is expected to not only revive sheep farming but also conserve the genetic resources, offering wider choice of genetic materials for effective breeding and selection, and preserve and enrich the associated culture and tradition.

    5th November, Bumthang: As an effort towards efficient fodder resources utilisation to sustain dairy farming in the country, the National Center for Animal Nutrition (NCAN), Bumthang under Department of Livestock (DoL) has supplied 61 fodder chuff cutter machines to potential dairy farmers of seven Dzongkhags of Bumthang, Chukkha, Dagana, Paro, Samtse, Sarpang and Trashiyangtse.

    29 October, 2015, Dechenpelrithang: Sheep was once a reliable source of income and livelihood especially among transhumant (seasonal movement of people with their livestock between fixed summer and winter pastures) herders of highland regions. Although, reared both for wool and meat; in the earlier days, majority of herders reared it for production of wool. Realizing the importance of sheep for highlanders, systematic breeding intervention in sheep was initiated with establishment of first sheep breeding farm in Merak with winter grazing ground in Khaling. The breeding trial on sheep began with the import of 100 Rampur Burshire Sheep from Himachal Pradesh in India in 1965.

  • Consultative Meetings on Agricultural Marketing Policy

    October 16-19, 2015: The Department of Agricultural Marketing Cooperatives(DAMC) in collaboration with ICIMOD, Nepal hosted consultative meetings on Agricultural Marketing Policy for South-South Central and West-West Central Regions at Gelephu on 16 October and at Thimphu on 19 October.  The meetings were held to discuss, views, comments and recommendations on the Draft AMP earlier developed by DAMC.

    The representative officials and participants from DAMC, ICIMOD, Nepal, Dzongkhags/Geogs, Local Government, Custom, Trade, FCBL, Woman Groups and Private Enterpreneurs attended the sessions. The meetings are being assisted and funded by ICIMO, Nepal. The next consultative meeting for the Eastern Region is scheduled to be held on 18.11.2015.
