Pemagatshel: Unlike other villages in the Dzongkhag, the villages of Zalashing, Gamung, Nongar, Paithung, Shali, Rimphung, Dorey, Gomchu, Shumar, Maan and Khothakpa under Shumar geog have been busy with the fodder seed production business over the years. ‘It was started way back in 1993 by few farmers and the number has increased today,’ shared Sangay Tshering who is the focal point for the feed and fodder development program.
The business has been providing an additional income to the farmers besides agriculture crops and livestock. This year 64 households produced 4278 kgs of Ruzi, one of the sub-tropical fodders which were sold at Nu. 130/kg and fetched them Nu. 5,56,140/-. Another, 14 households produced 251 kgs of Molasses seed that fetched them Nu. 37,650/-. In total, farmers earned Nu. 593970/- in 2016 -2017. The seeds were sold to the National Centre for Animal Nutrition (NCAN), Bumthang and the office appreciating the seeds shared that the quality has improved over the years. ‘The recent visit by Dasho Dzongda who shared his wisdom to the seed producers was an inspiration for them,’ said Memey Sonam of Gamung.
