  • New yak cooperative formed in Bumthang

    8-10 March, Bumthang: Forty yak herders (30 males and 10 females) from Chhokor Toe at Thangbi met to understand and form a yak cooperative. Chhoker Toe has two yak groups, Khendrock and Dhurdrock with 40 herders.

    During the meeting, the selected 7 cooperative principles were discussed such as voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, members economics participation, autonomy and independence, education, training and information, cooperation among cooperatives and concern for the community. The selection for chairperson, secretary, accountant, board of directors and other management committee members were also held in presence of all the observers. The awareness on the benefits of forming a yak cooperative and joining the national level yak federation was further discussed.

    More priority was given to the drafting and amendment of cooperative by laws based on the cooperative act 2009 and rules and regulation 2010. The members discussed on defining and setting up the roles and responsibilities of members, management committee, funds and savings, business plans, marketing, penalties and termination of members in details.

  • GIS training for highland livestock officials

    An advocacy-cum-training on geographic information system (GIS) was carried out for the highland livestock officials from 3-7 March at the National Highland Research & Development Centre (NHRDC) Jakar, Bumthang. It was aimed to build the capacity of officials on the application of GIS tool in highland livestock development activities.

    It was attended by 38 highland officials from NHRDC, National Research and Development Centre for Animal Nutrition, National Horse Breeding Farm and Integrated Yak Breeding Centre, Haa. Participants were introduced to QGIS free software and its application in general context. They also learn to install QGIS software, create maps, print quality maps using composer, create shape files, joining data, editing attribute table, geo processing tool (clipping and buffering) and importing and exporting data from QGIS to google earth and vis-a-vis. They further learn to gather field information using mobile SW maps and downloading the data to QGIS.
