  • Workshop on Dog Population Management (DPM) and Animal Health

    January 9-12, 2020: A four-day Dog Population Management (DPM) and Animal Health coordination workshop was organized in Regional Revenue and Custom’s Office (RRCO) conference hall, Gelephu. The workshop with the theme, “fostering team building for enhanced collaboration and effective service delivery of animal health services” was conducted with the objective to update and sensitize participants on animal health policies, strategies, plans, guidelines and projects, strengthen collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, share field and technical experiences and deliberate on issues that encumber effective delivery of animal health services in the country.

    The two highlights of the workshop were the “World Café” session which enabled the participants to discuss on critical topics and come up with way forwards related to Dog Population Management in Bhutan and the “Technical presentation” session which saw a range of technical presentations broadly classified under three themes, “Research and parasites”, “Case studies – Obstetrics, surgery and medicine” and “epidemiological researches”. On the last day of the workshop, Dr. Tashi Samdup (PhD), the Director General of Department of Livestock inaugurated official website for Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC) Zhemgang.

  • Workshop on development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

    The antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they were first discovered. In animals, we use antibiotics for improving welfare and for enhancing the production. However, the indiscriminate use of these antibiotics has led to emergence of resistant bacteria in which antibiotics no longer work also known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The UK Government has established the Fleming Fund to respond to the global threat of drug-resistant infections.

    Bhutan has received the UK government-based Fleming Fund Grant to improve the diagnosis of antimicribial resistant infections with an emphasis on antibiotics, to improve data management, surveillance and to inform policies/practices at national and international levels. The grant is aimed to improve the diagnosis and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in both human and animal health sectors.Under the Department of Livestock,  National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) is being identified as the beneficiary institute and four laboratories (National Veterinary Laboratory (NCAH); National Food Testing Laboratory (BAFRA); Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC) (Kanglung); and Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC) (Tshimasham) as surveillance laboratories for the project.

  • Cattle show at Samdingkha, Toedwang Gewog under Punakha Dzongkhag

    The Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Punakha organized cattle show at Samdingkha under Toedwang Gewog on 10th January 2020. The event was graced by Foreign Minister Lyonpo Tandin Dorji in the presence of Dasho Dzongdag, Dasho Dzongrab and invited guests from Dzongkhag and Gewog Administration Chhubu and Toedwang Gewogs. Close to 250 dairy farmers from Chhubu and Toedwang Gewogs took part in the show.

    The event was aimed to encourage farmers to keep high yielding and higher longevity dairy cattle for the sustainable dairy value chain in the Dzongkhag. The panel of judges evaluated and ranked around 150 jersey cattle above 50% blood inheritance gathered during the show. The Regional Livestock Development Centre, Wangdue also took an opportunity to exhibit Azolla technology, improved beekeeping, animal health and sales of livestock products. Quiz competition was also held among four dairy farmer groups of Dzomi, Guma, Kabisa and Toedwang Gewogs as an attempt to share knowledge, skills and abilities on livestock husbandry practices to the farmers gathered.
