  • A Woman Independently stands on her own Feet in Gangzor

    Untitled-1Going upstream following the ascending road to Kurtoe will greet you with thick jungle and the roaring Kurichhu. After crossing the Lhuentse hospital and making your way through broad leaved forests and fallow agriculture fields, you will be greeted by a smiling talkative lady, Aum Sonam Lhamo. She is one of the progressive agriculturists living in a village called Kelung under Gangzor Gewog in Lhuentse Dzongkhag. She has a poultry and a dairy farm.

    Back in 2009 she started her poultry farming with a capacity of 100 birds. Then the monthly generated income was lucrative and she used to earn around Nu. 14,000 as net profit per month. Initially, the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector helped in establishing the poultry farm through the provision of construction materials and inputs supplies such as CGI, wire mesh, feeder and water filter along with other necessary technical assistants.

  • Fodder seed production, a lucrative business for Shumar farmers

    Untitled-1Pemagatshel: Unlike other villages in the Dzongkhag, the villages of Zalashing, Gamung, Nongar, Paithung, Shali, Rimphung, Dorey, Gomchu, Shumar, Maan and Khothakpa under Shumar geog have been busy with the fodder seed production business over the years. ‘It was started way back in 1993 by few farmers and the number has increased today,’ shared Sangay Tshering who is the focal point for the feed and fodder development program.

    The business has been providing an additional income to the farmers besides agriculture crops and livestock. This year 64 households produced 4278 kgs of Ruzi, one of the sub-tropical fodders which were sold at Nu. 130/kg and fetched them Nu. 5,56,140/-. Another, 14 households produced 251 kgs of Molasses seed that fetched them Nu. 37,650/-. In total, farmers earned Nu. 593970/- in 2016 -2017. The seeds were sold to the National Centre for Animal Nutrition (NCAN), Bumthang and the office appreciating the seeds shared that the quality has improved over the years. ‘The recent visit by Dasho Dzongda who shared his wisdom to the seed producers was an inspiration for them,’ said Memey Sonam of Gamung.
