  • Fodder seed production, a lucrative business for Shumar farmers

    Untitled-1Pemagatshel: Unlike other villages in the Dzongkhag, the villages of Zalashing, Gamung, Nongar, Paithung, Shali, Rimphung, Dorey, Gomchu, Shumar, Maan and Khothakpa under Shumar geog have been busy with the fodder seed production business over the years. ‘It was started way back in 1993 by few farmers and the number has increased today,’ shared Sangay Tshering who is the focal point for the feed and fodder development program.

    The business has been providing an additional income to the farmers besides agriculture crops and livestock. This year 64 households produced 4278 kgs of Ruzi, one of the sub-tropical fodders which were sold at Nu. 130/kg and fetched them Nu. 5,56,140/-. Another, 14 households produced 251 kgs of Molasses seed that fetched them Nu. 37,650/-. In total, farmers earned Nu. 593970/- in 2016 -2017. The seeds were sold to the National Centre for Animal Nutrition (NCAN), Bumthang and the office appreciating the seeds shared that the quality has improved over the years. ‘The recent visit by Dasho Dzongda who shared his wisdom to the seed producers was an inspiration for them,’ said Memey Sonam of Gamung.

  • Highland Biogas Technology inaugurated in Gasa

    Untitled-2February 20, Gasa: The highland biogas technology and training cum awareness program was inaugurated at Damji, Khamoed geog. A total of seven biogas plants, 6 in Khamoed and 1 in Khatoed were installed.

    The lowest biogas plant was constructed at an altitude of 1900 masl and the highest at the range of 2569 masl. In both locations, the plants were successfully installed and are fully operational. It was established by the Bhutan Biogas Project (BBP) and farmers jointly with the Department of Renewable Energy.

  • MoU for Fish Fauna Assessment signed between DoL and DoFPS

    Untitled-1A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for Fish Fauna Assessment was signed between the Department of Livestock (DoL) and Department of Forest and Park Services (DoFPs) on February 10.

    As per the MoU, DoL jointly with DoFPs shall implement the fish fauna research in the main rivers and tributaries of Aie Chu, Nyera Ama Chu and Manas river basin. The research will assess the fish diversity in Bhutan and develop the much needed fishery database in the country for both fisheries development and conservation programs. The National Research Centre for Riverine and Lake Fisheries (NRCR&LF) under the Research and Extension Division of DoL will coordinate the project activities.
