  • 2nd CF Networking Workshop held in Punakha

    19 September, Punakha: Punakha Dzongkhag has 37 approved community forest till date with an area of 3355.58 hectares managed by 1171 households. On 8 and 9 September, the Dzongkhag Forestry sector in consultation with Helvetas, organised a two day 2nd CF Networking Consultative Meeting at the Tashi Pelri Hotel in Khuruthang, Punakha.

    The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Tshering Phuntsho, National CF Network Facilitator who briefed the participants on the overall objectives of the workshop, and explained why CF networking is important.

  • Planning and training workshop for the first ever National Snow Leopard Survey

    Untitled7-11 September 2015, Thimphu; The Wildlife Conservation Division, Department of Forests and Park Services, is conducting a five-day planning and training workshop for the first ever nationwide Snow Leopard Survey. The training workshop is attended by 30 field staff from snow leopard range parks, namely Jigme Dorji National Park (JDNP), Wangchuck Centennial National Park (WCNP), Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve (JKSNR), Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS), and Paro Territorial Division. The training workshop is facilitated and conducted by a team of national resource persons, most of whom are Core Team Members of the National Snow Leopard.

    The theme of this training workshop is “Counting the mountain queen: National Snow Leopard Survey of Bhutan 2015-2016”. The main objective of this workshop is to familiarize the field staff and survey enumerators with the objective of the National Snow Leopard Survey, and acquaint them with the survey protocol that includes methods in handling and stationing the camera traps and GPS and their accessories, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in wildlife scat collection and handling. The resource persons also imparted general ecology and conservation status of snow leopards in addition to sharing of their past experiences of snow leopard surveys in JDNP, WCNP, and BWS.

  • First SFS-Bhutan Semester Program Begins

    20150907_103149A group of 21 undergraduate students from the United States of America (USA) arrived in Bhutan today (7 September 2015) to attend a 3-month’s semester program in Bhutan. The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE) and the School for Field Studies (SFS) jointly hosts an interdisciplinary field based course on Himalayan Environment and Society in Transition. During the program, students will undertake three main courses: i) Political and Socioeconomic Dimensions of Environment; ii) Mountain Ecology; and iii) Land Use, Natural Resources, and Conservation. The students will also carry out directed field research and learn about Bhutan’s religion and culture.\
