    The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) would like to inform all concerned Food Business Operators/Establishments/Food Manufacturers, that perishable and high risk food items such as bakery products etc. are being displayed in Retail shops for longer duration without maintaining the required storage condition. This is a serious Food safety concern, as these products are highly susceptible to quick spoilage and could cause serious food poisoning.

    Therefore, BAFRA would like to notify all Food Manufacturers/Food Business Operators within the country that such high risk food products must be stored within required storage temperature (15 °C – 20° C), which should clearly be prescribed on the product label. Bakery items containing custards, meat or, vegetables, frostings made of cream cheese, whipped cream or, eggs etc. must be kept under recommended refrigeration condition (1.6°C – 3.3°C).

  • Orientation workshop on Food Safety Licensing Process

    The workshop oriented the field officials in the food safety licensing process

    September 5-9, Thimphu: Thirty five BAFRA officials including the officer and base in-charges, and food inspectors from field offices and focal officers from head office attended a five day orientation workshop on Environmental Food Safety Risk Assessment  for Licensing of Food Business at Rochog Pel Hotel in Thimphu.

  • Notification on Seizure and Disposal of Sausages

    This is to inform that during the routine monitoring and inspection of food establishments on July 13, 2017, the BAFRA officials have encountered 354 packets of sausages with expired shelf life date in the B-Coop Shop, Thimphu. The products were processed by the Livestock Products Value Addition Centre, Serbithang, Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. All the sausages were seized and disposed off in the biological pit at Memilakha, Thimphu on the same day in accordance with the Food Rules and Regulations of Bhutan 2017.

  • First National Biosafety Board Meeting held

    August 17, Thimphu: The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) organised the first National Biosafety Board Meeting under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Dorji.

    The board members are the heads from the Department of Public Health, Department of Trade, Department of Revenue and Customs, Bureau of Law and Order, Department of Agriculture, Department of Livestock, Department of Forest and Park Services, National Biodiversity Centre and BAFRA. The Board also has a high-level representative from the National Environment Commission and Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

  • Press Release

    Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests certified Carrot as organic for “Rangshin Sonam Detshen“, Organic Farmers group, Khatoed Gewog, Gasa Dzongkhag. Carrot is the third crop to be certified by BAFRA as organic besides potato and garlic. This Organic group was certified by BAFRA in 2016 as per the Bhutan Organic Certification System (BOCS 2013) guidelines.

    The Organic Certification Committee (OCC) instituted within BAFRA evaluated the inspection reports and laboratory test results. The soils sample was tested in Central Laboratory in Thailand and the Carrot sample was tested in Export Inspection Agency in India. All the certification requirements were in conformity as prescribed therein the BOCS 2013 guidelines. The Organic Certificate for Carrot was awarded on 11 August 2017 with a validity of one year from the date of issue.
