  • Training on Strengthening Plant Biosecurity Underway

    Untitled-116 October 2017, Thimphu: A two day workshop on “Strengthening Plant Biosecurity through import of clean and healthy Plants and Plant Products” for BAFRA Plant Regulatory and Quarantine Officials which is being organized by Bhutan Agriculture & Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture & Forests began today. Director General of BAFRA graced the opening session of the workshop which will be conducted for two days from 12-13 October 2016.

    About 44 Plant Regulatory & Quarantine Officials are participating in the Workshop from all the field offices and entry points with facilitation from the BAFRA Management at the Head office, and experts from NPPC, DoFPS and NBC. The BAFRA Inspectors will be trained on Regulatory Framework for Import and Export of plants and plant products encompassing quarantine pest and diseases and Invasive Alien Species. This training will help in building the competencies of Quarantine Inspectors to identify the correct signs and symptoms of pest and diseases and take appropriate phytosanitary measures. Furthermore, the incidence of unlawful trade of endangered species of plants and plants products will be minimized through proficient inspection and certification process. It is crucial that Plant Inspectors are trained periodically and kept abreast with the latest information and know-how to prevent and combat biosecurity risk in appropriate time.

  • Notification

    The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) would like to inform all concerned Food Business Operators/Establishments/Food Manufacturers, that perishable and high risk food items such as bakery products etc. are being displayed in Retail shops for longer duration without maintaining the required storage condition. This is a serious Food safety concern, as these products are highly susceptible to quick spoilage and could cause serious food poisoning.

    Therefore, BAFRA would like to notify all Food Manufacturers/Food Business Operators within the country that such high risk food products must be stored within required storage temperature (15 °C – 20° C), which should clearly be prescribed on the product label. Bakery items containing custards, meat or, vegetables, frostings made of cream cheese, whipped cream or, eggs etc. must be kept under recommended refrigeration condition (1.6°C – 3.3°C).

    September 5-9, Thimphu: Thirty five BAFRA officials including the officer and base in-charges, and food inspectors from field offices and focal officers from head office attended a five day orientation workshop on Environmental Food Safety Risk Assessment  for Licensing of Food Business at Rochog Pel Hotel in Thimphu.
