  • Training Workshop on Inspection, Monitoring and Handling Applications of Genetically Modified Organisms

    3Through the National Biosafety Framework Project, BAFRA, a four-day long training workshop on “Inspection, Monitoring and Handling Applications of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)” is underway in Wangchuk Resort, Thimphu from 14th to 17th July 2014.  A total of forty officials from various BAFRA field offices are being trained on inspection, monitoring and handling applications of GMOs. The main objective of this training workshop is to equip the field officials with the necessary skills for inspection and monitoring of GMOs and products derived from GMOs.

     With the enactment of Biosafety Bill of Bhutan 2014 and as the National Competent Authority for biosafety, BAFRA will be mandated to carry-out inspection, monitoring and detection of GMOs and products derived from GMOs.

    26 June, Thimphu: The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) is organizing a technical workshop for the food inspectors to discuss the proposed imported food program.The proposed program will identify the procedures for applying and issuing an import permit for food. It will also establish procedures for inspecting imported food at the border and for inspecting food importers against Good Importing Practices.

  • Training on Electronic Traceability for Agricultural Trade Facilitation and Smallholder Integration

    16 -18 June, Thimphu. A three days training on Electronic Traceability for Agricultural Trade Facilitation and Smallholder Integration was conducted with an aim to identify trade facilitation measures and building capacities of government and private sector stakeholders to promote intra-regional learning of such measures in the Asia–Pacific region. The training was organised by the Trade and Investment Division (TID) at UN- Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) and theBhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA).

    9 June, Thimphu: Representatives from various Asian countries are in the capital to participate in the 16th National Project Coordinators meeting. The participating countries- Malaysia, India, Mongolia, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Bhutan- that are at different phases of implementing the National Biosafety Framework are here following a practice which provides a platform for information sharing and to share technical knowledge on new and emerging developments in biosafety.
