  • Notification: Illegal import of pet animals

This is to inform all concerned that any individuals importing pet animals shall do so as per the Livestock Act of Kingdom of Bhutan 2001. Of late, it came to the notice of the Department that some individuals have been importing pet animals for sale in the country without prior import permit issued by BAFRA, MoAF. This activity is illegal and can have animal health and economic repercussions due to disease outbreaks. Zoonotic diseases can have implications on human health. Therefore, to curb such practices, the Department would like to notify the concerned In-charges of National Animal Hospital, Thimphu, NCAH Serbithang, Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospitals of all Dzongkhags, four Regional Livestock Development Centres, four Satellite veterinary Laboratories to authenticate the source of pet animals brought to the clinics for registration and vaccination. If the pet has been imported, the owner must be asked to produce import permit issued by BAFRA without which the service shall not be rendered and the case must be reported to the nearest BAFRA office for further action.
