Capacity building for CSIs on Food Safety Licensing and Certification requirements

16-19 September, Thimphu: Forty participants consisting of representatives from Cottage and Small Industries (CSI) based in Thimphu, Paro, Chukha and Bumthang, Department of CSI, Queens Project Office, National Post Harvest Centre and BAFRA officials attended the awareness training for CSI manufacturing food products on food safety licensing and certification requirements at Jambayang Resort. The Director General of BAFRA graced the opening session.

In his opening remarks, the Director General highlighted the importance of CSIs in the nation’s economic growth and improving the livelihood of the rural population. He stressed on the importance of food safety licensing based on the criteria for good hygienic and manufacturing practices as a starting point for food productcertification for better marketing access of our agricultural products.

The training consisted of presentations and group work discussions was aimed to orient the CSIs on food safety licensing and certification requirements and make them understand their strengths and weaknesses in meeting the product certification requirements both in the domestic and export markets through self- assessments. During the discussion, while the CSIs acknowledged the support provided by the Government, the following points were submitted for consideration by the Government:

  1. Build capacity of National Food Testing Laboratory which is the backbone for the food industries in Bhutan
  2. Pursue recognition of BAFRA’s certification services by the importing countries particularly India
  3. Organise twinning programmes for CSIs with the well established food industries in Bhutan to learn their best practices

The training was a part of the CSI Flagship Programme focused at capacity building of CSIs in licensing and certification of their food industries for better marketing access.
