6 April 2014, Trashi Yangtse: The 11.4 kilometer Buyang Irrigation channel under Khamdang Gewog in Trashi Yangtse dzongkhag was re-inaugurated by Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji on 6 April, 2014. The irrigation channel had been previously initiated and commissioned by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 1974 as a model project in eastern Bhutan to make people agriculturally self sufficient and self reliant, underwent major renovations in 2012. The construction of the historic irrigation channel was one of the largest kinds of project in eastern Bhutan.

The completion of the historic irrigation channel is expected to benefit about 700 households in four Chiwogs putting back the 2308 acres command area under cultivation that had remained fallow for quite some time due to irrigation water problem.  The Agriculture and Forests Minister said that the channel thus was of great importance to the people there. Further having given high priority to irrigation water in 11th Five Year Plan, Royal government of Bhutan had spent more than Nu. 16 million for the renovation of this channel.

His Excellency stated that the reopening of the channel was timed with the Kholong Chhu Hydropower Project and said that the Khamdang people had great opportunities to earn additional income, reduce import and earn foreign currency as well. He thanked the public, the dzongkhag, gewog administration and all the concerned agencies for their support rendered stating “I would urge all of you to proactively participate in agricultural production year round by upgrading the farmlands for better and more production of cereals, vegetables and fruits”. Lyonpo also mentioned that power tillers would be hired to the people at minimum rates and added “now you do not have to travel far by carrying or even bearing the loss of perishing vegetables because the Food Corporation of Bhutan will come to your respective places to collect your yield”. Thus the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo expressed his satisfaction in being able to carry on with His Majesty the Fourth King’s initiation of this noble act and dedicated it to the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s 60th Birth Anniversary.
