14 November 2017: From 9 to 11 November, 2017 at Greater Noida in Delhi, Bhutan participated in the 19th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC) led by the Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Forests who was invited as a speaker during the inauguration session.

The OWC happens once every three years in its host country and is the biggest meeting point for organic farmers, scientists, bureaucrats, certifiers and entrepreneurs. Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, in his speech, said that Bhutan is keen in promoting sustainable farming practices like Organic Agriculture (OA) and the principles of OA have close resemblance to the country’s developmental philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

For the first time, Bhutan participated in an exhibition in the OWC and the exhibitors were private companies viz. Bio-Bhutan and Chuniding Food based in Thimphu. The exhibits were natural and organic products from Bhutan namely lemon grass oil sprays, soaps, Rhododendron massage oil, organic turmeric, ginger, green teas and various packaged and processed food.  Apart from making a brisk sale of their products the exhibitors opined that such exhibition would enhance the marketing linkages for their natural and organic products outside the country.

The trip was organised by NOP.
