August 3, Thimphu: To complement the development needs of livestock sector in the country and create job opportunities for youths and farmers in livestock enterprises, the Bhutan Livestock Development Corporation Limited (BLDCL) was launched yesterday. Jigme Wangchuk is the first Chief Executive Officer of the company.
According to a press release, BLDCL, the third state owned enterprise (SoE) will support the Department of Livestock (DoL) in production and supply of quality livestock inputs especially those which are imported and help produce products that are not produced enough by the Department. It will also help DoL to export livestock products and other value added items such as sausages, ham and bacon.
BLDCL will also liaise closely with stakeholders in marketing the farmers’ products. It will ensure the concerted efforts in developing the contract farming system with farmers and entrepreneurs in producing livestock products for domestic and export markets.
Although, DoL achieves their yearly annual performance agreement targets comfortably, there is a need to decentralise such input production interventions into a more commercial mode to benefit farmers. As such, BLDCL will attempt to produce livestock inputs enough for domestic consumption as well as strive to export them while also enhancing the contract farming system.
The Hon’ble Agriculture Lyonpo at the launching shared that around 2.3 billion import in livestock sector has been recorded. He added that BLDCL will work towards reducing such huge import. He also added that the Ministry will transfer livestock inputs production facilities of Samrang in Samdrup Jongkhar, Relangthang in Sarpang, Livestock Products Value Addition Centre in Serbithang and B-Coop Shop in Thimphu to BLDCL. This will enhance the production of day-old chicks, piglets, fingerlings, goats (Does and Bucks) and dairy cows and heifers which will tremendously help farmers to access quality inputs for better income.
The Chairman of BLDCL, Dr Tashi Samdup, also the Director General for DoL shared that with BLDCL in place, soon Bhutan will be self-sufficient in many of the livestock products which we import in huge quantities and create livestock farming as one of the main sources of income for farmers and youths.
The Department has been able to establish a major livestock project close to worth of Nu. 633 million which will be implemented in 3 years. As such, the creation of BLDCL is regarded as a key achievement and a game changer in enhancing rural economy.
