March 30, 2017, Thimphu: Hon’ble Minister for Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji chaired the Advocacy Meeting on (BhutanGAP). The meeting organised by BAFRA was attended by the stakeholders comprising of all the Departments and Agencies within the Ministry and also other stakeholders including representatives of Farmers’ Cooperatives nearby Thimphu.

A Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), as defined by FAO is a “collection of principles to apply for on-farm production and post-production processes, resulting in safe and healthy food while taking into account the economic, social and environmental sustainability”.

The FAO-TCP assisted project coordinated by BAFRA developed the BhutanGAP Standard, documents for Scheme Owner (MoAF) and Certification Body (BAFRA) which was presented by Mr. A. K Sen, FAO-GAP Consultant. The meeting as intended, sensitised the stakeholders on importance of BhutanGAP Standard. The major highlights were the BhutanGAP requirements for on-farm and post-harvest processes besides its benefits of assuring food safety and market access for BhutanGAP certified agriculture produce.

The Hon’ble Minister officially handed-over Scheme Owner and Certification Body documents to the Department of Agriculture and BAFRA respectively.
