BAFRA Workshop on “Challenges in Implementation of Food Rules & Regulations” underway

2 March 2016, Chuniding Resort, Thimphu: A two day workshop on “Challenges in Implementation of Food Rules & Regulations” began today. Organised by the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, the opening session saw the Director General and Senior officials of BAFRA attending.

Around 40 Food Regulatory & Quarantine Officials from all BAFRA field offices including the Head Office are attending this 2 Day workshop with facilitations from the BAFRA Head Office, Thimphu.

The Food Act of Bhutan 2005 and its Rules & Regulations 2007 are being implemented by BAFRA Field Officials daily to ensure food quality and safety. The need for amendment of provisions of certain sections of the Food Rules & Regulations 2007 was strongly felt by the BAFRA field officials as they face a lot of practical inconveniences while implementing the food regulations in the field. The workshop is thus aimed at discussing thoroughly the provisions of the food rules and regulation in concurrence with the field practicalities and current situations relating to food business operations in the country.

Therefore, the primary objective of the workshop is to discuss and thresh out all the field issues and challenges in implementation of Food Rules and Regulations 2007 thereby improving the efficiency and effectiveness of regulatory service delivery. The revised draft regulation, as the outcome of the workshop, will be submitted to the Ministry for endorsement.
