Awareness workshop on Fortified Rice held

Bumthang: The Department of Agriculture in collaboration with Department of Public Health, Department of School Education and other relevant agencies such as BAFRA, FCBL, GNHC, WFP conducted educational and awareness workshop at Jakar for all DEOs and one Principal of Central School on 19-20 July 2018.

About 50 participants including journalists from media houses to understand the science and need behind the intervention of rice fortification for school feeding programme attended it. Since the rice fortification programme is relatively a new strategy to supplement eight essential micro minerals/nutrients (Vitamin A, B1, B3, B6, B9, B12, Iron and Zinc) blended @ 1:100 recommended ratio in normal rice at FCBL, Phuentsholing.

As the supply of fortified rice has been already started, there was a need to educate the consumers on the importance of such intervention. This is the first time, the national task force members made an effort to educate the relevant stakeholders with mandate to cascade the workshop to respective Dzongkhags and cover all the principals and mess-in-charges of school feeding programme.

A common mannual to cascade the workshop has been developed for all the trainers. The workshop was funded by WFP, Bhutan.
