December 6, Thimphu: Her Excellency Mrs. Brigittee OPPINGER-WALCHSHOFER, Ambassador of Austria to Bhutan called on to the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor. Their Excellencies discussed about the organic agriculture. Lyonpo shared that Bhutan was an organic farming by culture and considering the health issues, the government aims at reducing the use of chemical fertilisers by practicing organic farming.
‘‘We are trying to conduct a flagship program by demonstrating the skills and techniques of doing organic farming in all the 205 gewogs in the country. Through this flagship program, we are looking forward in solving the unemployment problems for youths and achieve the government’s target of being self-sufficient,’’ Lyonpo added.
The Ambassador said, ‘‘We the Austrian government have an agriculture university which focus mainly on organic farming. So it would be of much beneficial to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests and we are looking forward in collaborating with your Ministry.’’
The main constraints and challenges faced by the Ministry and Bhutan as a whole is the lack of laboratory and equipment to check the products. They also discussed about the eco-tourism which is the key factor for the socio-economic development in the country.
