A new approach of promoting fruits in the east

Farmers Training

January 27- February 3, Mongar: The Second session of the training program under Systematic training and orchard establishment for the farmers is underway at the centre for the period of 10 days. The first session of the training was completed at the beginning of this year from 1st to 10th January 2016 with the farmers of Trashigang, Pemagatshel and Samdrupjongkhar. For this session the total of 22 farmers from Lhuentse, Mongar and Trashiyangtse are here to learn about Nursery production, planting, basin making, Fertilisation and Pruning.

Every year such training is organised by Research and Development Center (RDC) Wengkhar to promote more fruits and vegetables for the six eastern regions. While organising such trainings, firstly farmers were selected from the target Dzongkhags based on the implementation guide and on horticulture production potential in collaboration with the Dzongkhag and geog agriculture extensions. The selected farmers were given two days of awareness program on horticultural crops wherein participants were exposed to available technologies at the centre. At the end of the awareness program, further consultations were made and the most interested candidates were selected. Farmers were then called for hands on practice on improved orchard management practices for the duration of 10 days at RDC Wengkhar.

For this year’s awareness program, feasibly studies and layout of fruit crops were done and farmers were asked to dig pit for planting the seedlings. Then, the selected farmers were given training depending on nature of fruit tree managements. The farmers will learn about nursery production, planting, basin making, fertilisation, pruning and when they go back after 10 days with the seedlings, the field demonstration of planting will be done in their orchards. Finally, the same farmers will be trained on harvesting and post-harvesting technologies from June- July month.
