2nd June, Mongar: On the eve of celebrating 2nd June 2015 Social Forestry Day and also to commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the members of the Drangmaling Kuenphen Community Forest under Mongar Dzongkhag and the staffs of Central Park Range of Phrumsengla National Park have shown the exemplary work to rest of the Community Forest members to prove that Community Forest is not only for utilisation of forest resources but also a way to re-stock the resources through plantation of trees of having high commercial timber values.
The Day was celebrated by planting over 100 numbers of Walnut seedlings planted in 1.5 acres in the burnt and open areas of the CF. The seedlings were supplied from the nursery of Central Park Range Office at Lingmethang, Mongar upon the requisition put up by the members. The members of the CF were contented with their all efforts and expressed the views of having initiated plantation by the park management for the first time within 5th year of managing their Community Forest since 2010. They were also extremely delighted for being able to dedicate their work on the auspicious day to celebrate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. One member said, “The trees they planted on this day would grow not only for us but even I couldn’t imagine how much would be the numbers in our child’s time”. The technical support and guidance were given to the members on how to take care of the seedlings.
Besides contributing to conservation of biodiversity in the CF areas, the plantation if proven successful, it is expected to provide timber of high quality for their rural house constructions or for sale in the market which would earn dual income (From timber & Walnut seed) for the community to improve their livelihood.
