Thimphu: The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF) will commemorate World Food Day 2020 on a theme “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together. Our Actions are our Future” on 16 October.

The event is a joint effort among the MoAF, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and other partners. Amidst the global health crisis of COVID-19, the event is an opportunity to reflect on this year’s theme while working together to address issues related to food, nutrition, agriculture and overall health and well-being of the citizens.

Each year, the World Food Day is observed coinciding with the founding day of the FAO. World Food Day 2020 also marks the 75th anniversary of FAO in an exceptional moment as countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The day is being marked just a week after WFP, the largest humanitarian organization and the first responder on the frontlines of hunger, food insecurity and disasters was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

One of the most celebrated days in the UN calendar, this occasion is known to trigger collective action across 150 nations bringing together governments, businesses, NGOs, media and the members of the public to realize a world free from hunger and malnutrition and promote awareness on healthy & sustainable diets for all.

Safe and nutritious food is essential to realize the full potential of an economy. Inspired by His Majesty’s dynamic leadership and vision, Bhutan has recognized food and agriculture as important tools to build back better and galvanize the nation’s economy.

The theme for this year is a call for national solidarity to grow local, seasonal, nutritious foods in a sustainable manner to help the Bhutanese population, especially the most vulnerable. The theme aptly reflects the RGoB’s efforts to make food systems more resilient so that they can withstand the shocks from increasing price volatility, climate change and supply chain disruptions. It will also help deliver affordable and sustainable healthy diets and decent livelihoods for citizens engaged directly or indirectly in the food value chains.

The Ministry also takes this opportunity to recognize the role of farmers, workers and staff who are making sure that food reaches the consumers despite the unprecedented disruptions due to COVID-19.
